What is the best way to use essential oils and aromatherapy?

Throughout the coursework I’ve taken, I find it’s best to know many ways to use them and pick what fits each unique situation the best.

Below are the 3 main ways to use essential oils and when to choose each one.

1. Choose topical if: working on skin with geranium, lavender, or Gentle Baby; targeting an area residing under the skin like PanAway on the knees, peppermint for headache, or DiGize for upset tummy; working reflex / acupressure points using oils that correspond with each body system.
2. Choose internal if: cleansing the body, dissolving fat using grapefruit or other citrus oils, lowering pain using copaiba / helichrysum / lavender, improving the immune system using Inner Defense, Longevity Caps, or lemon oil.
3. Choose diffusion if: doing anything! It is proven that one of the most efficient ways to bring oils into the body is via inhalation, NOT topical application!!! If you want to improve immunity, diffuse lemon, Thieves, or Immupower. Looking to help the mood in your house? Diffuse Harmony, Joy, or Citrus Fresh. My most favorite is to diffuse Sacred Frankincense with lavender while sleeping to get a good nights rest, lower cortisol, and feel refreshed!

When I don’t want to mess around, I use all three application methods. Regular topical application is not absorbed enough to be detected in the blood after application. To increase absorption, use compresses and poultices over the applied oil.If an oil is ingested, it can be filtered and excreted by the liver / kidneys and may not get circulated to get the desired effects.

The most important method to include is diffusion. It has been proven to be the best way to get oils into the blood stream. As the oil is inhaled, it goes right from the lungs into our blood and is circulated throughout the body. When using the diffuser, only 10 to 20 drops need to be diffused at a time. To be most efficient, use a timer that can allow for the diffuser to run 5 to 10 minutes every hour. A diffuser blasting oils into the air for hours on end is not better and is a waste of money!

My most favorite diffuser is the TheraPro item 4495, my second choice is the Ultra Sonic item 4524. To learn how to use the TheraPro CLICK HERE. To learn how to use the Ultra Sonic CLICK HERE.

You may have heard that Essential Oils contain proteins and/or that they contain hormones, vitamins, or enzymes. You may have even heard such statements at functions sponsored by Young Living, including Young Living Conventions. The short answer to the question in the title of this article is: “No. Essential Oils do not contain any of these molecules.” Having said that, let me explain.

Proteins and Enzymes

First of all, Proteins and Enzymes are very large molecules that cannot pass through the distillation process required to produce an essential oil. The range of molecular weights that can pass through distillation ranges up to 500 amu (“amu” stands for “atomic mass unit.”). Proteins and Enzymes have molecular weights that range well above 10,000 amu. Amylase, an enzyme necessary to digest sugar, has a molecular weight of around 45,000 amu. Most proteins weigh considerably more than that. Besides, the heat of distillation breaks down proteins and enzymes so that they could not survive to be found in an essential oil.

So you won’t find any protein or enzyme molecules in an essential oil, with the exception of oils cold expressed and not distilled. The only expressed oils Young Living sells are the citrus oils, pressed from the rinds of the fruit. These can contain traces of proteins, but the proteins do not participate in healing since they cannot penetrate skin, administer to cellular levels, nor circulate in the tissues of the body as do the smaller molecules of a distilled oil.

Vitamins

As for vitamins, they could theoretically be found in essential oils since the molecular weights of some vitamins (like Vitamin A, C, and E) are less than 500 amu. Other vitamins, like B and D, have larger molecular weights. Vitamin B12, for example, has a molecular weight of 1355 amu while a molecule of Vitamin D weighs 793 amu. In case you were interested, the elements contained in Vitamin B12 are Carbon, Hydrogen, Cobalt, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Phosphorus and have the formula, C63H88CoN14O14P. So now you know why you need a trace of Cobalt in your diet.

However, even though some vitamins could pass through the distillation process because their weights are less than 500 amu, they are generally not found in essential oils. I have never seen an analysis of any essential oil indicating the presence of a vitamin. So while there could be traces of Vitamin A, C, or E in an essential oil, their presence would not be significant enough to consider that oil to be a source for these vitamins.

Because the citrus oils are cold expressed, they can contain larger molecules, like beta-carotene, whose molecular weight is 544 amu. Our bodies can break a beta-carotene molecule into two equal halves and attach an oxygen atom to form two molecules of Vitamin A with a molecular weight of 288 amu. Beta-carotene is found in carrots, which mothers have traditionally advised their children to eat “because they are good for your eyes.” Since carrots contain beta-carotene, which leads to Vitamin A, which is necessary for eyes to see, mothers are scientifically correct in this assertion. But when it comes to essential oils, the traces of beta-carotene in some citrus oils cannot be considered a significant source as a precursor for Vitamin A.

Hormones

Regarding hormones, their molecular weights all range under 500 amu. Hormone molecules have to be small enough to traverse through the tissues to reach their destinations between organs at cellular levels. For example, Estradiol, Testosterone, and Progesterone are natural hormones we all manufacture in our bodies. Their molecular weights are 272 amu, 288 amu, and 314 amu, respectively. So theoretically you could find compounds that would be classified as hormones in essential oils, but like vitamins, such ocurrences are so rare you never see hormones mentioned in the chemical analyses of essential oils.

The above discussion establishes the non-existence, or virtual non-existence, of Proteins, Enzymes, Vitamins, and Hormones in essential oils. But wait! There is more.

Blueprints and Templates

First of all, the electromagnetic imprint of a protein can be passed into and carried by an essential oil. Chemistry deals only with physical attributes of atoms and molecules, not their electromagnetic fields or frequencies. Hence, a chemical analysis is not a complete description of an essential oil, nor is a chemical formula a complete description of a compound.

When you were conceived, two different cells comprised of proteins (a sperm from the father and an egg from the mother), united to form a single cell which then divides to become an embryo and eventually a complete human being comprised of trillions of cells. Once a person has grown into an infant or an adult, there is no trace of the original proteins of the original cells from mother and father to be found in the body, yet the body faithfully reflects the characteristics of the original cells. While the original proteins have long disappeared, the blueprints they contained are still manifest in the human being that grew from them. The features we inherit from our parents remain with us for life even though the original proteins carrying their genetic codes have long disappeared.

The same is true with essential oils. During their formation in the plant, certain proteins and enzymes of the plant participate in the formation of the oil molecules and their electromagnetic imprints and frequencies are carried into the oil. So in a sense, essential oils do contain proteins and enzymes vibrationally even though, they are not present chemically.

Frequencies and Electromagnetic Fields

We know that essential oils contain a spectrum of frequencies emitted by the vibrations of the various electromagnetic bonds between the atoms of their molecules. These frequencies have been measured and described. According to quantum physics and modern string theory, all creation and all matter consists of vibrations that, on a gross level, appear as the solids, liquids, and gases of our universe tangible to our five senses. Beneath tangible matter and our visible human bodies lies a subtle electromagnetic template or blueprint invisible to the five senses, yet exists as an essential foundation for the physical reality we experience.

So it is true, in this sense, that essential oils contain “proteins and enzymes.” We do know that essential oils enhance enzymatic activity in the body which is why they are added to the enzyme supplements that Young Living sells. We also think that essential oils stimulate the body to produce enzymes. Essential oils stimulate the growth of proteins in our bodies during the repair and regeneration of wounded tissues. In fact, the healing processes stimulated in our bodies through the vehicles of essential oils all involve the creation of proteins and enzymes.

How Oils Enhance Vitamin Activities

Similarly, essential oils enhance vitamin utilization in our bodies, increasing their absorptivity and utility. That is why Young Living has added essential oils to its vitamin supplements. We also think that essential oils can stimulate our bodies to make its own vitamins, which are facilitated by the living flora in our bodies. Most people don’t realize that the living colonies of friendly bacteria that dwell in our bodies, not only help us with the metabolism and digestion of nutrients, but they also participate in the creation of necessary vitamins for our health and wellness. Essential oils nurture these colonies and, thus, enhance our levels of necessary vitamins.

While you won’t find high levels of actual vitamins in essential oils, as mentioned above, taking oils into our bodies helps to create and maintain a healthy vitamin balance.

How Oils Act in a Hormonal way

Regarding hormones, oils do not contain any hormones manufactured or needed by human bodies, but the molecules of essential oils can act like hormones in that they can occupy hormonal receptor sites and, thus, trigger beneficial hormonal actions in support of our endocrine system. Also, as in the case of proteins, enzymes, and vitamins, essential oils can stimulate and support our bodies in producing the actual hormones we need. Since hormones are small molecules that can come through the distillation process, it is possible that essential oils do contain traces of plant hormones which can be beneficial to our well being.

Since the presence of hormones in essential oils would only be in very tiny amounts, not detected by a chemical analysis from a laboratory, the “hormonal” properties of oils would be more in the way of support and enhancement of our endocrine systems, assisting in the manufacture and balance of the hormones our body naturally makes.

So there you have it. Do essential oils contain proteins, enzymes, vitamins or proteins? A full answer would be both, “Yes and No.” And now you know how this can be so.

pH Balancing Product Review: Alkalime

by Jen Springer

Greens are awesome for balancing our pH, but you can only chug so much liquid that tastes like freshly cut lawn.

I drink fresh vegetable juice, green powdered drink, capsules of greens, and eat tons of veggies … but I don’t feel it’s enough to balance my pH. So I add a pH balancing product to my night time regimen.

Let’s rewind to the main causes of an acidic body. Stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, being an “O” blood type, illness, and emotional distress make the body acidic.

Why should you care? Acidic body = breakdown in health.

When my pH is off, this is how I know: candida gets out of control, bloated, inflammation in my bursa and connective tissue.

Basically, I feel like a gross bloated painful mess.

The previous version of Alkalime was nasty! It tasted gross and had so much sodium bicarbonate, it was downright icky. I also felt like it messed up the pH of my stomach. Whereas this new formulation doesn’t.

I am always concerned with pH balancing products because they can shut down the precious acid production in our stomachs which messes with our digestion BIG TIME. No enzymes being catalyzed makes for undigested food.

This is the main reason I will not drink “alkaline” water from a popular pH balancing machine.

The new formulation of Alkalime is completely different and very balanced with nutrients that balance the body’s pH, it doesn’t force pH balance.

I gave the new Alkalime a try because I know I must keep my pH in check. I eat a lot of alkaline / green veggies, but I know I need to do more because of the low pH symptoms.

After about a 2 weeks on Alkalime I noticed: more frequent bowel movements, itching in ears and bloat decreased, and my body pain is gone; I feel better.

I only take it before bed, just 1 tsp.

WARNING: it is very fizzy!!! So don’t drop in the powder into a full glass of water – it will bubble over. I just “set” the spoon in about 1/4 of a glass of water and let it fizz itself out. Then I add more water.

It tastes like flat lemon / lime pop, kinda yummy in a weird way! I have added a drop of ocotea for added yeast killing, tastes even better.

by Jen Springer

Simple, quick, delicious, and DETOXIFYING?

The recipe below came out so well, I had to share immediately!

I have chugged lots of nasty gunk in attempt to cleanse my body. Recently, I have had a massive bout of inflammation. My knees, shoulders, lower back, left wrist, and left hip are annoyingly painful for no evident reason.

When my connective tissues go aflame, I know it’s time to go put out the fire with veggies and omega fats. I realized this when I got sick in 2007, all my body would tolerate was ground flax and greens powder. I lived on it for a few weeks. The slime of the flax got to me and many times I gagged it down, but what happened after a few days was amazing.

All pain in my body was gone. Poof.

As I reflected today on the limited creativity I had five years ago with the flax and greens, I knew I could create something fun and satisfying.

When you’re done with this bowl, your tummy will be full and body will be smiling.

What you need:

6 Spears Steamed Asparagus

2 C. Water

1 Clove of Garlic

2 Stalks of Raw Celery Cut in 2″ pieces

Juice of 1/2 a Lemon

1/2 tsp. Dried Basil or 2 Leaves of Fresh

1/8 tsp. Redmond Real, Himalayan, or Unprocessed Dead Sea Salt

2 tablespoons of freshly ground golden flax or ground chia.

Add all ingredients except the flax to blender and puree until smooth. Then heat over stove until warm, but not hot. Boiling kills the enzymes in the raw veggies and they won’t do their job as well purifying the body. When done, whisk in the golden flax. The soup will become thick. Eat immediately.

What did I have for dessert? A sliced small raw beet with a bit of salt. Remember, I’m detoxifying not self indulging. Everything I eat has a purpose. Beets bind out acid and are one of the top foods for the liver, plus they satisfy the sweet tooth.

If I come up with any more fabulous detox meals in these next few days as I release this inflammation, you will be the first to know.

Share your experience over on Facebook, did this work for you too?

Step by Step How to Do a Whole Body Detox

by Jen Springer

Cleansing doesn’t have to be hard or taste like stagnant pond water.

I love the idea of 2 scoops of this and 1/3 of a tablet of that makes the yuck go away!

It can be that simple, that’s the way is should be.

The first time I did this cleanse, I was so excited and relieved that everything was outlined for me. I’m not so great at keeping myself on track, that darn wagon is so easy to fall off of.

In case you missed the directions, you can find them HERE. I tweaked it a bit and made it my own, of course!

A few things were changed up so that I could really work on the inflammation I’ve been feeling the last few months. The juice before bed is meant to pull out acid and help my body become more alkaline. The Omega Blue helps inflammation as well because of the omega 3′s from the fish oil.

The other angle I took for reducing inflammation was to target the adrenals. The PD 80/20 is pregnenolone and DHEA – both help a stressed set of adrenal glands. The best way I have found to help kick start the hypothalamus is to place some DHEA under the tongue. It doesn’t have any taste thank goodness!

The other endocrine helper I used were the Thyromin in the morning, Endoflex in the lunch smoothie, and 4 Multigreens with dinner. Thyromin and Multigreens helps my low thyroid and give me energy – without stimulants.

This cleanse can be done without added supplements, but I had chronic nagging pain to get rid of so I hit it hard! It worked. As a result, my pain level is down 50%. I’m going to do the cleanse again in a few weeks and see what happens, why not?

Without further ado, here’s the custom adrenal building / anti-inflammatory 5 day whole body detox I created for myself:

RIGHT WHEN I WOKE UP:

8 ounce glass of water with ½ a fresh lemon or lime juice

1/3 of a capsule of PD 80/20 under my tongue, holding it for one minute

BREAKFAST:

2 scoops Balance Complete with ½ dropper of YL Stevia and 5 drops orange oil

3 Thyromin

3 Omega Blue

1 Digest & Cleanse

2 Comfortone

SNACK:

3 ounces Ningxia Red

½ Cup Granny Smith Apple, Berries, or Bing Cherries

LUNCH:

2 scoops Balance Complete with ½ dropper of YL Stevia, 1 drop Endoflex Oil

1 Super B (expect a niacin flush!)

Snack:

2 ounces of Almonds, Walnuts, or Pine Nuts

½ Cup Granny Smith Apple, Berries, or Bing Cherries

DINNER:

2 scoops Balance Complete with ½ dropper of YL Stevia and 5 drops tangerine oil

3 Omega Blue

2 Comfortone

4 Multigreens

1 Digest & Cleanse

SNACK:

Vegetable Juice: 1 very large cucumber or celery heart. Juice the WHOLE thing, peel and all. Dilute 50/50 with water add a sprig of fresh mint leaves or a bit of lime juice if desired, drink it all. YUM!

BEFORE BED:

1/3 of a capsule of PD 80/20 under the tongue, hold for one minute

1 Life 5

4 drops of peppermint oil in one gallon of water. Drank this throughout the day.

What should you expect from a cleanse? You could have less pain and inflammation like me. Or, if you’re craving salt and sugar that may subside. Allergies, what allergies?!? One of my favorite outcomes is when people report to me that they could just put down cigarettes EFFORTLESSLY because of cleansing.

Now you’re asking, “Where do I get this stuff?”

I know, a few dozen of you have already sent me requests asking for the source and I apologize for the delay!

The above products come from Young Living. I have been using for over 10 years and love them as much now as I did then. The very first cleanse that helped me go from a 1-bowel-movement-a-week person to a “regular” daily person was from them too! The stuff works and I trust recommending it to you.

I’ve heard stories where people pick up some random product from the local health food store have skin break outs, headaches, or major colon blowout – I don’t want that to happen to you! This is so gentle you can still work and live a normal life while you do it.

If you’re a do-it-yourself person, you can go to the Young Living site direct by clicking HERE. Or, if you want to ask me questions regarding your personal situation email me at Jen@NaturalAnxietyTherapy.com. I’ll help you get going in the right direction.

Here’s a question for you -

Are you feeling blah, sluggish, bloated, and all around toxic? Yes? Let’s work together and get your body working the way it supposed to. Feeling good is your birthright!

5 Day Whole Body Nutritive Cleanse Review

by Jen Springer

Yay, I’m done!

This cleanse taught me a lot. It’s been about 5 years since I’ve actually done an intense targeted cleanse. I’d been taking nutrients to build my body and bring it back from the brink so it had the ju-ju to detoxify itself on a daily basis (adrenal support, B vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics, etc.). But to do a cleansing fast, nope it’s been a while.

In the end, I lost 5 pounds and my tummy is F-L-A-T. My cravings are gone, connective tissue inflammation is down and that gross bloated feeling is gone.

The cleanse was a success and I reached my goals. I’m happy!

You’re probably thinking this is the miracle cleanse and you just can’t wait to do it, right? Let me fill you in on the bit of the non-sugar coated details before you decide if this is for you.

Why I am I telling you the gory details? To let you know this is normal and to be expected!

I’m not not a regular “mover”, I mean … I have to take herbs, probiotics, fiber, stay hydrated, and minerals to keep my bowel moving regularly. So who only know’s what was hanging out in my colon because the second night’s bowel movement could have peeled paint off the walls. If I was in a public bathroom, I would have lost friends! Super stinky.

My guess is that I was getting rid of undigested protein that was hanging around in my digestive tract. It got better as the days went on and nasty stuff exited my body. Plus, I added some pro-biotics to help THAT situation.

Another thing I noticed is my body odor. I didn’t have any throughout the week. My theory is when I eliminated hard to digest protein throughout the week like eggs, meat, and cheese my body didn’t have that toxic undigested protein smell. I was happy to realized that this cleanse rested my gut so I could make it stronger and hopefully have better digestion when I start eating these proteins again.

The last thing I noticed was how my weight fluctuated. In the first 48 hours I dropped 3 pounds. As the days went on the last few pounds came off. What was interesting is that some days I woke up and weighed up to 1 pound MORE than I did the night before! Throughout the day I would lose up to 2 more pounds and in the evening I’d be up a pound. The scale went up and down like notes on sheet music. In the end, I was down – yay!

3 most important things I learned?

1. Stay hydrated! I don’t know the exact amount, all I know is I always had water in hand and was drinking it.

2. Keep your bowels moving. A few a day keeps the bloated belly away! Have an herbal tea with cascara sagrada (I like Smooth Move by Traditional Medicinals) on hand if you start to get backed up. I also keep my Vitamin C and magnesium up, they are my secret bowel moving weapons.

3. Don’t let what the scale is doing panic you! Understand you’ll go up and down, don’t sweat it.

Was this a piece of cake? No, but it helped that my detox smoothie tasted like cake! I would have liked food, but all the fiber in the program made this tolerable and kept me from falling off the detox wagon.

Next post I will share my general outline that I am going to use with my readers and clients as a result of this adventure. It’s always my intention to have personal experience with anything I recommend to make sure it works.

by Jen Springer & Dr. David Stewart

Let’s clear up the confusion … are all essential oils the same?

After teaching essential oil classes for 10 years, I’ve concluded there are 2 types of people – those that realize genuine therapeutic essential oils are extremely rare and those that think Aura Cacia is “good quality.”

Essential oils are not created the same. In fact, if an essential oil is of poor quality it may not work or even be dangerous.

Before using any essential oils – even for air freshening or lotion – it’s important to know which ones to use so you get the results you want.

My rule of thumb is that if I can’t safely eat them, there is no way I’m putting them on my skin, home, or animals. I want them to be effective, not harmful.

I can’t define therapeutic grade better than Dr. Stewart, the repost of his article from Raindrop Messenger Vol. 9, No. 4 is below.

*************************************************************

Anyone Can Claim Their Oils to Be “Therapeutic Grade” . . .
But Only Young Living Can Claim “Young Living Therapeutic Grade™”

by David Stewart, PhD

The term, “Therapeutic Grade,” applied to essential oils was originally coined and defined by Gary Young and Young Living. Years ago some aromatherapists and competing companies criticized Young Living for using this term saying, “There is no such term.” They were right in that no government or regulatory agency had defined the term, but Gary and Young Living did define it. You can use any word or term you like so long as you define what you mean by it.

You will find “Therapeutic Grade” defined, not only in Young Living literature, but also in CARE Publications such as “Statistical Validation of Raindrop Technique,” “Healing Oils of the Bible,” and “The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple.” Since Young Living adopted the term and defined it, after first criticizing Young Living for using it, many companies are now using it for their own oils without defining what they mean by the word, thus implying that their oils are “just as good as Young Living’s oils.” That is why Young Living has modified and Trade Marked the statement that YL oils are “Young Living Therapeutic Grade Oils™” No one but Young Living can use that phrase to describe their essential oils.

Whereas meeting standards like those of the French AFNOR (Association Francaise de Normalization) or the ISO (International Standards Organization), ISO and AFNOR only consider whether an oil has sufficient percents of the main compounds to legally claim it to be the species on the label. For example, if an oil contains enough menthol, you can legally sell it as “peppermint” when, in fact, there may be no actual peppermint plant oil present whatsoever. Hence, an aromatic oil can be 80-100% synthetic and meet AFNOR/ISO standards. AFNOR/ISO only takes into account the end product by testing for the percents of a few compounds that account for flavor and/or aroma. These standards do not take into account the manner by which the oil was obtained nor whether any of the healing compounds are present. In fact, the compounds responsible for healing can all be absent and an oil can still meet AFNOR/ISO standards, which may be adequate for perfumes and flavors, but totally ineffective for healing.

By contrast, Young Living’s “Therapeutic Grade” standard takes into account everything from planting the seed to marketing the oil. With Young Living, “Therapeutic Grade” means there has been verification of the correct species when the seed was planted, the purity and manner of cultivation (no chemicals or nearby pollution, etc.), the proper time of harvest to optimize the healing properties in the oil, the proper manner of distillation to capture all of the therapeutic compounds, the right chemical composition as determined by sophisticated laboratory tests, and the purity of the packaging–i.e. nothing added, nothing taken away, stored in light-protected containers (amber or blue bottles) of glass, ceramic, Teflon, or stainless steel, and kept in a suitable environment of appropriate temperatures. All of this is taken into account with Young Living’s definition of “Therapeutic Grade.” No other company maintains or can claim such a standard, even though they may use the word.

When people come to you saying they have found “cheaper oils that are just as good,” ask if they know how the plants were grown, cultivated, harvested, distilled, tested, and packaged and if a true “therapeutic” standard was held and maintained throughout the process. You won’t find another company that maintains such meticulous standards from “seed to seal” as does Young Living. Gary Young and Young Living stand alone in the world of essential oils in measuring up to such standards. You can visit the Young Living farms, distilleries, laboratories, and packaging facilities to verify these standards for yourself. Anyone can. Is this possible with any other company?

The following article can be found at http://www.youngliving.com/en_US/company/therapeutic-grade.html. There are so many competing essential oil companies these days, as Young Living Distributors you need to know how to explain to people how Young Living oils are different than any other brand and have superior attributes that no other brand can rightfully claim. Most companies claim that their oils are “100% pure, Therapeutic Grade, Organically grown, etc.” But most of the time their claims and labels are misleading and do not fulfill the standards they claim.

One thing we all know: Young Living oils work and do so reliably year after year. So how do we convey to others, who have heard claims of other companies, that our oils are the best and have no equal? The following article may help. It breaks down the key qualities of Young Living oils into four “Ps” which are easy to remember and present.

They are 1. Plants, 2. Preparation, 3. Purity, and 4. Potentcy. You might also visit the archives of The Raindrop Messenger and read the first two articles in the July-August 2008 issue, Vol 6 No 4.

~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Factors that Make YL Oils a Cut Above All Others

The process Young Living uses when planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distilling a batch of oil is crucial to retaining its vital compounds. Without the exact blend of naturally-occurring plant chemicals, an essential oil can lose its beneficial properties and fail to produce the desired effect.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Young Living is able to make this assertion because of our strict cultivation process—illustrated by the Four Ps—that guarantees the optimal potency of every Young Living essential oil.

1. PLANTS
An oil’s potency can be affected not only by selecting the proper plant to cultivate, but also by where the plant is grown, the quality of soil in which the seed is planted, and even the time of day it’s harvested.

Young Living has extensive experience selecting the correct species of plant for desired oil potency, planting under optimal conditions, using ideal soil and natural methods to encourage growth, and knowing the precise time to harvest each crop. Only those plants that produce the most active and widest array of therapeutic compounds are selected.

2. PREPARATION
Once the optimal soil, plant, cultivation, and harvesting conditions have been adhered to, the plants must be distilled properly in order to meet Young Living Therapeutic Grade standards. Young Living uses a gentle, proprietary technique for steam-extracting the most potent essential oils, which remains unmatched throughout the essential oils industry.

To meet Young Living Therapeutic Grade distillation standards proper temperature must be maintained throughout the distillation process, and pressure, length of time, equipment, and batch size are strictly monitored.

3. PURITY
Young Living Therapeutic Grade standards prohibit the acceptance of any diluted, cut or adulterated oils. Every product Young Living produces—essential oils, oil blends, nutritional supplements, or personal care—meets strict purity standards.

Every batch of essential oils is subjected to rigorous, state-of-the-art analysis at the Young Living chemistry lab. Using some of the most advanced equipment in the world, our scientists subject every batch of essential oils to Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometer testing, and heavy metals analysis. Oils that exhibit even the slightest hint of possible adulteration or tampering are rejected.

4. POTENCY
The culmination of the preceding three stages, Potency means that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil product are of the highest and most consistent bioactive levels. Without strict adherence to the Young Living Therapeutic Grade standard in the Plant, Preparation, and Purity phases, the final product would not have the necessary potency to create the desired effect.
